Which Breast Implant Is Best for Me?

Which Breast Implant Is Best for Me?

Which breast implant is best depends on your tissue, the feel you want, and how you will follow the implant over time. Saline and silicone gel both add volume. Neither is automatically the right one for every chest. If you are comparing options for breast augmentation in Miami, use the points below as questions for your consultation.

Saline and silicone gel

Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water after they are in place, so the incision can be smaller. If the shell leaks, the breast loses volume and you can see the change. The body absorbs the salt water. Silicone gel implants are filled before surgery. They usually feel closer to breast tissue. A gel leak can be quiet, which is why follow-up imaging is part of the plan for many patients. Ask which imaging your surgeon wants, and when.

The incision you prefer and the implant you prefer are linked. A smaller incision is easier with an implant that is filled after it is placed. A gel implant needs an incision large enough for the filled device.

Surface, shape, and profile

Round implants are the usual choice for augmentation. Profile, not a special shape, is what changes how full the breast looks from the side. Ask whether the surface is smooth or textured, and why that surface is being recommended for you. Textured implants have been linked to a rare lymphoma, so the reason for using one should be specific, not a default.

Placement matters as much as the device. Under the muscle, the muscle covers the upper part of the implant. In front of the muscle, the breast tissue is the cover. Thin tissue in front of the muscle shows the implant more. Your surgeon should say which plane they recommend and why, based on how much tissue you have.

The follow-up is part of the choice

Implants are not lifetime devices. A saline leak announces itself. A gel implant needs you to keep the imaging schedule. If you already know you will not come back for checks, say that before the implant is chosen. The "best" implant is one you understand, including what a leak looks like and what you are supposed to do about it.

Common questions

Do silicone implants feel more natural?

Gel usually feels softer than saline, especially when the breast tissue over the implant is thin. Feel also depends on placement and on how much of your own tissue is in front of the device.

Is a textured implant safer?

Texture is not a safety upgrade. It has been associated with a rare lymphoma. Ask why it would be used in your case. Many augmentation plans use a smooth implant.

Can I choose the implant on the day of surgery?

The decision should be made at the consultation, when you can compare width, profile, and fill with the measurements of your chest. The operating room is the wrong place to start that conversation.
