Some Miami breast augmentation patients may have gotten breast implantslong before they knew they wanted kids. Or, maybe they got breast augmentation after having a baby, but now have another one on the way. Perhaps they want children someday, but want breast implants, now. The question: Is it safe to breastfeed after a breast augmentation? The short answer is yes, but there are things to consider.
Possible Problems
First, when you undergo a breast augmentation, your nipples may be less sensitive than normal. This sensitivity is crucial for milk production. Also, once the baby is born, and the milk comes in, most women will find their breasts become engorged. However, when you have breast implants, they become a lot more engorged, which can be accompanied with pain, fever and even chills.
Yes, You Can!
The type of surgery you had will impact your ability to breastfeed. Your chances are best if the incisions were made under the breast fold or through the armpit. Also, if the nerves around your areola were undamaged during surgery, you should be ok. The nerves are important because they are what tell the brain to release the hormones that allow milk production. You won’t know until you try. If you have silicone breasts and are worried about a leak, don’t. Chances are if there is one, it won’t hurt your baby.
One More Thing...
Tell your baby’s pediatrician about your surgery so your child’s weight can be closely monitored to ensure he or she is getting enough milk. If you can only produce some breast milk, don’t despair. You can always supplement with formula.
