The right age for breast implants is not a birthday. For cosmetic breast augmentation in the United States, saline implants are approved from age 18 and silicone gel implants from age 22. That is a device rule. It is not advice that surgery is a good idea the day you become old enough.
Growth has to be finished
The chest should be done growing. Operating while the breast is still changing means the result changes with it. Age 18 is the floor for saline cosmetic augmentation, not proof that growth is finished for every person. If your size has changed in the past year, say so. That fact matters more than the birthday on the form.
Ready is a separate question
You should be able to describe the change you want, accept that the two sides will not match perfectly, and follow limits on lifting and exercise afterward. The reason for surgery should be yours. A gift, a partner, a school event, or a date on a calendar is a weak reason. Someone who wants the largest implant available, or who expects surgery to fix a mood, is not a straightforward candidate at any age.
Health matters at every age. Nicotine, medicines that affect bleeding, and conditions that change wound healing all belong in the consultation. So does the question of whether you can take time away from school or work for the early limits.
Reconstruction is a different approval
The ages above are for cosmetic augmentation. Reconstruction after mastectomy follows a different device approval. If that is your situation, say so at the start so the visit is planned around it, including who else is on your care team.
Common questions
Can a teenager get breast implants as a gift?
Cosmetic saline implants are not approved under 18, and silicone gel implants are not approved for cosmetic augmentation under 22. A birthday present is not a surgical plan. The person having surgery has to be the one who wants it and can consent.
Is there an age that is too old?
There is no upper age in the device rule. The limit is health, the reason for surgery, and whether you can manage recovery. A careful history and a clearance when you need one matter more than the number.
Does the age rule apply to a lift without implants?
A lift is a different operation. The 18 and 22 rules are about the implant devices used for cosmetic augmentation, not about every breast procedure.
