A breast augmentation done right can lead to great satisfaction, but done wrong, breast implants can cause a lot of pain and disappointment. For this reason, it’s important to always go with a board certified plastic surgeon. All of Coral Gables Cosmetic Center’s surgeons are board certified; a few are even double board certified.
What Can Go Wrong?
First, the good news. Bad breast augmentations are rare. But, they do happen. When they do, patients may encounter complications like infected breasts caused by an allergy to the implants or a botched surgery. Another problem could be nerve damage, which may lead to the loss of feeling or numbness. Constant pain can result from a rupture, or the forming of scar tissue. Poor healing may also lead to scarring.
What Does Board Certification Mean?
In order to minimize your risk of developing some or all of these complications, the best route to take is to start with a reputable doctor who is board certified. Surgeons who perform breast augmentation are usually certified in either plastic surgery, surgery or both. The certification, granted by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) means doctors must meet certain criteria and undergo extensive training to receive the distinction. Other leading organizations that offer board certification to plastic surgeons are the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), and American College of Surgeons. In this case, you’ll see FACS after the doctor’s name, which means Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
